The United States of America is
a federal constitutional republic comprising fifty states and the Federal
Capital District.
Most of the country is located in central North
America, where (48) states and Washington, the capital, are located between the
Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, and is bordered by Canada to the north and
Mexico to the south.
Alaska is located in the northwest of the continent,
bordered by Canada to the east and Russia to the west across the Bering Strait,
while Hawaii, an archipelago, is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The
country also includes a number of territories and islands in the Caribbean and
the Pacific Ocean. The United States is the third largest country in terms of
area (3.79 million square miles or 9.83 million km²), and ranks third in terms
of population (307 million people). The United States is one of the most
ethnically and culturally diverse countries in the world, due to the large
immigration from different countries. The American economy is considered the
largest national economy in the world, with a GDP of $20.3 trillion in 2020
(15.93% of the global total in 2019).
